it has been a while since a post giving an update on the movie side so…

quite a busy and exciting  time, with “ON LOCATION” and “BECAUSE THEY ARE THERE”, my two latest documentaries going from Festival to Festival and winning Awards ! It is such a pleasure to have audience’s and jury’s feedback from almost all around the globe !

It does motivate me for next project, another documentary, called “NEW LIGHTS”, that is still in development phase. All I can say about is that it did evolve from the original form I had thought and did adapt to our new broadcasting environment and audience’s habits. Not every project hits his aim via a standard large screen diffusion…but no worries I ll keep you posted

Otherwise a very cool project for a great local Rock Band – 1989  – where I had to master the skills of director of photography. Small crew, small budget but great fun and a result that I will soon post, once the release gets official !!

And last but not least, another project in both co-writing and directing of an ART MOVIE with a great friend that masters both writing and painting !

That’s all for now, stay tuned for more !!

It s been on the front pages of most of the newspapers since now many many months, and usually has been described as a crisis : Humanitarian, economical, religious or cultural. Most of the time everyone , on any side is being represented as a victim and we rarely hear the voices of those who help, welcome and care about each other.

Last December I had the opportunity to work with a great artist that decided to embrace this hot topic on immigrants ; it took us time to find out what was the best way to put images on his lyrics and his music. It took time to avoid the traps such project could have. It took some thinking to maintain a balance between the reality and the fantasy of the situation. Yes a very complex equation just like the situation of any immigrant and the country that welcomes him , by duty or free will.

This project called back my personal family s history  – refugees in Europe in the 80s – which added an interesting personal involvement in it.

So here we go with the link to it ; I hope you will enjoy it and as usual, stay tuned for more updates on my work …and collaborations 😉

With all what’s happening around in this world, it’s quite hard not wanting to expose one’s point of view on this blog….

But as I am a movie director, well I am keeping it all for my next Documentary Project !! A long feature documentary !!

Yes and the challenge is quite big, as a lot of people are analyzing current dynamic in very diverse, clever and efficient ways.

So what about mine ? Which angle is my preferred ?

For now all I can say is that the working title for the project is ” Tell me a story”, and the shortest of the first draft synopsis is ” what did happen in those years ?”

I know it is quite short and mysterious. But no worries more to come soon !!

And regarding the latest projects, I am on the final post-production of the Music Video for Mehdy Von Ti. A great experience and a very interesting result ! What can I share so far…well the credits !!

In the preparation of the planning of the second half shooting time of my village’s documentary, I realized that some month ago and in order to work with people who are randomly away from my location (yep – the good side of globalization ), I prepared a quick but not that short editing of some images I had so far. I qualified it as a teaser, a work in progress element that was needed to see the different types of images the movie will be made of.

When writing this, I can’t help thinking it is a very personal movie, probably hard to understand in its current shape and probably will be another one treated as ” we don’t see the artistic content and perspective of it”, just like Winobranie has been qualified by the officials I was asking some help for the post-production…

In current world where the electronics has become so affordable, I understand that the gatekeepers of the industry have to select what they want to sponsor and if you are outside of the system since you start a project, you cannot expect – or rarely – to find help. This is the system as it currently works, I have nothing against, and my nature being  to always be at the margin of any system , well it is a choice so I know what it means and which resources I can count on and which not.

This being said – and don’t think It is a complain, not at all – I think this project can again be perceived by some people like a pre-ordered movie….And yes it is one !..A promotional movie on the choices we make, the legacy we give, the future we hope.

To finish with,  I am confident that the editing, sound editing and sound mix team will make out of this a brilliant movie. A great team work, just like I believe the movie making should be !

A safe landing 2 days ago. The feeling of an uncommon jet lag. We arrived home after our holidays. We came back home after work as well. 3600 km in 10 days. Our plane was a car. Our trip back in two times. Our vacations in four movements and 8 bits.

Now time to start the week. In fact not – we are Thursday. Weekend is close and no time to breathe. The air feels different. Probably the mountains, the altitude. It was flat over there. Never ending horizon. A vaste space where thoughts get wiped away by the wind. Here the mountains are hermetic. Here the heights are a barrier. We should feel safe. We do feel home.

Working time. Restless. Something changed. The landscape changed. Snow in the Alpes and rain here down. I feel like it is time to rest. But the rhythm is an new one. Actually like an old friend we knew that came back to our place. 3 steps for the movement. Then immobile. Time to think. No need to hurry before the next step.

The rain goes on outside and I know the digestion time started. A lot happened between the road trip, the memorial visit and the Festival. So many different things. So much in common. We are moving and entering a new phase of our lives and it is right. It sounds right.

All experiences are worth. Every new person you know completes you. Sometimes it is hard to see it, sometimes it is easy. Just natural. Just the way it should be.

I remember something from a deep past that goes beyond my own existence. It is rare.

I shared time in every possible way. It is rare.

I had the greatest professional time ever with amazing people. Every jury member. Every staff member. Thank you guys

I love music. All kind of music. So was I happy on this year of 1995, when a friend was looking for some people to work at the Montreux Jazz Festival. What an experience ! Working in the place where all my most beloved musician played once. Ok the job wasn’t that attractive on the paper : food & beverage delivery boy, until the moment we got, with my brother, assigned to the VIP special requests : in other words the only guy allowed to go backstage and take care of the all the artist’s requests. Just amazing for a young 16 years old boy. I worked there another 5 summers – until 1999 edition – and gradually got higher in the hierarchy ladder of the F&B section. It actually even helped me in getting my first job. In fact that Festival took a great place not only in my professional life but private as well.

I have some many great memories about that place, about the people I met, about the artists I’ve seen.

Since 2000 I try to go back every year, as part of the “normal” audience. Insider times are definitely over and it is much better so. (unless one day I can shoot a little something there)

Not a surprise if I tell you that this year I was back there for a couple of evenings. So two evening concerts later, I realized that enjoyment changed a lot. Nothing new. Nothing that nobody ever wrote about. But I felt a bit disturbed by the situations. When in a concert – from an artist that you like, that you paid good money for – you spend more time texting and trying to record the moment the lead singer looks at you, I have some doubts. On the other side , on the stage, I’ve seen as well younger bands that seem to play only for themself, as they would do in their living room and not trying to get this connection with the rest of the audience.

Many years ago, maybe was it in 1997, the Montreux Jazz tried to set up a live online worldwide jam session in the Montreux Jazz Café. Something strange, with low resolution cameras, screens showing you NY, Frankfurt and I don’t remember where else and musicians playing the same standard but being localized miles away from each other. It was super high-tech for that time , believe me. Nowadays it is just normal stuff to be in front of a webcam, to broadcast any type of creative content and no to be puzzled any longer (no matter what is being broadcasted, you know what I could mean…. 😉 )

And so having on stage a band that plays for itself, an audience that records what it is supposed to be living and experimenting…well it is strange to me. There is link missing. Looking like some musical tourism…before you post it all on YouTube or any other site. By the way, talking about tourism, do you remember those boring slides evening about your family trips… ?

I don’t want to complain, but if the need to capture the moment is what makes it really valuable = the fact to share the proof you were there makes what you experienced valuable = the amount of people testifying that you were there by watching what you recorded makes your choices valuable….well..not my cup of tea.

Or is it simply the ” because you worth it” effect ? You feel like being part of the fame / performance you are watching ? A 2.0 audience ? Interaction has to go beyond the vibes of your feelings and has to be technologically visible ?

After anybody’s sex tape….the music lover fan’s tape.

Do I seem to complain ? Ok maybe a bit. I can still allow myself a bit of indulgence on the practice of such. But if you think further…like on the green side of such : how much space would we save from some servers if not publishing those lousy recordings ? Another Go’s that keep our yearly temperature pretty exotic in the norther hemisphere…

And don’t you think this permanent availability of everything makes the artists performances weaker ? or harder to appreciate once you are in the concert hall and know exactly how the performance will look like ?

I must recognize I was always hiding a camera with me in those concerts halls as well as a bottle of water. Both were totally forbidden. I had water for my thirst, camera for my memories  with the stress of needed secrecy of “hide and use” but with the only aim to finish in my personal album and to be able to shoot images on a set that couldn’t be recreated.

I know time has changed and nowadays it is common to find any pirate recording from every possible band on the net. Not like on those days when I remember getting a bootleg from some cool bands was so rewarding ! By saying that I realized as well that it is over with the ranking of bands. Industry’s decay ? or social change ? if social change does it mean everyone is a star or we all agree on being pretty equals in our way of getting the light on ?

Then , as movie director, I must say I am thoughtful on the quantity of images that are recorded. I said in another post that I think the world as so much more to offer me than me to the world (in terms of movie making). So the question of the day : do we give something to the world and others when we post every little recorded moment of our life, or are we just blocking the world from giving something to us ? And in that case who is in a better position to share ? Who is legitimate ? Who’s not ?

Great question…no clear or unique answer…I hope 😉

For now, let’s just rooooock !

ps :

As a final joke..when writing this post, what do I see in front of me, on tv ? ..” with this new camera, shoot and share directly on the web….”
